redistricting

There has been a great deal of controversy about the Board of Educations attempt to achieve racial diversity by redistricting. If you are in the market for a house keep in mind that the district zones change periodically. Around every 10 years or so Stamford decides that their school population is out of whack compared to the overall makeup of the city. Originally the main goal was to "racially" balance the schools within +/-10% .

After the June 2007 landmark opinion of the US Supreme Court, that race cannot be a factor in assignments of children to public schools, the Stamford BOE substituted race with socio-economic background, hoping that they would achieve similar results as before. Socio-economic makeup depends on three factors:

  1. students receiving reduced/free lunch
  2. students identified as English language learners
  3. students residing in income restricted housing

On September 23, 2008 the BOE finally approved, after years of public upheaval, a new redistricting plan "Option 3" for Stamford. You can compare the "old" district zones and the "new" redistricted zones as per Option 3.
